5 Heart-Softening Words

5 Heart-Softening Words

Little Josiah, from my recent book, Josiah’s Fire: Autism Stole His Words, God Gave Him a Voice, inspires thousands with his great wisdom. I especially love one of the things Josiah shared with his mom, my coauthor, Tahni: “If you love the child you have, you’ll have the child you love.” The more I considered it, the more I realized this same truth truth could also apply to marriage. If you love the spouse you have, you’ll have the spouse you love. Dwight and I recently had an opportunity to give marriage counseling to a guy on the phone who was at the end of his rope. It still amazes me that God would lead us to help others at a time when we were enduring the most difficult test of our married life. In September I was diagnosed with spasmodic torticollis (cervical dystonia), which is why you haven’t heard from me in awhile. Well, that and the fact I was finishing Josiah’s Fire and a devotional called The Good Gift Giver (which will be offered across the globe when Tahni speaks on Sid Roth’s March broadcast of It’s Supernatural.) Dwight and I talked with the hurting man late into the night. After we talked about how years ago God brought resurrection life into our own suffocating marriage, we told him a story we heard somewhere along the way: Matt thought his marriage was over until someone presented him with a simple idea that might help. “Every day I want you to ask Tina, ‘how can I serve you?’” Feeling like he had nothing to lose, Matt decided to give it a try. When he asked his wife the question, it took a minute for her to get over the shock. Finally she piped up, “Ok… how about doing the laundry?” He did it without complaint, and the next morning when he asked his still-surprised wife the same question, she answered, “how about clean the garage?” It took him two hours but he did it. This went on for several days with him asking, her answering, and him lovingly stepping up to the plate in a way he’d never done in the past. Finally she couldn’t take it anymore; and the next time Matt asked his new favorite question, she shook her head. “No, no, it’s my turn. How can I serve you?” Change had already begun. What had started as words on his lips...

Reconciled

Reconciled

Isn’t that what it’s all about—being reconciled to God and living as if we truly are? Jesus is all about reconciliation. Bridging the gap between the Father and us. “It is finished.”  The curtain tore in two. We can enter a meaningful life of intimacy with Jesus. Christ the King lives within! The same Spirit that raised Christ from the death lives in us! “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7 Merry Christmas! In the comment section, name one thing you are thankful for this Christmas. Also feel free to write a few lines of a random Christmas poem. Start with a word that comes to your mind and build from there. Have...

However, Whenever

However, Whenever

However, Whenever   You are My crystal pitcher, pure refreshment, poured out. Depleted, exhausted, spent? Let My Living Water fill your space, richly. Again and again, I satisfy. Making you satisfying to quench. See My sparkling face shining through you, never dulling?   You know Me deeper daily, but I know you deeper still. You lived with Me from the beginning, a spirit-seed awaiting place and time. I waited with you before you even knew how to know.   I waited to breathe in you and be your love-blood. I waited to get messy for you and raise you up. I waited for you to stop waiting and say, “Yes.” “Yes” to what I did and “yes” to how I pour you out–whenever, however.    ~Cheryl Ricker   I’m linking up with Lisa-Jo Baker for Five Minute Friday today. And if you’re interested in learning how to say “yes” in your mess, I just know you would love Kristen Welch’s book “Rhinestone Jesus” {affiliate link} – just released and a beautiful example of God adding the extra to our ordinary to create an extraordinary...

Press On Strong

Press On Strong

As many of you know, I’m working on a new book that will release with Zondervan next year: Jesus in my Room   At least that’s what it’s called for now.  We’ll see if they change it or not. Have you ever worked on something where you continually feel that streeeetch of the soul? Then you know how I feel. Sometimes I wish I could order a little more trust and patience.  Maybe press the “buy with one click” button on Amazon. Here’s me talking to myself again: Did God call you to do this? Yes. Absolutely. Well, if he called you, you don’t have to worry. He’ll bring it to pass. Phew. Good reminder, good reminder. But you do need to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Yep, doing that. And keep thanking God. Thank you, thank you…. And on it goes. Truly, I feel so incredibly blessed to be the collaborator for this project. Ema McKinley is an incredible lady with an incredible story. When Jesus appeared in her room on Christmas Eve of 2011, he healed her deformed and crooked body from head to toe.   She’s a walking talking miracle! People who knew Ema before and after her miracle naturally show emotion when I talk to them about what happened—even her dentist! The other day, after getting a little boggled with writing, guess what came in the mail? The sweetest letter from a seventeen-year old girl, who has a lot more maturity than I did at her age. Anyway, I don’t think she’d mind if I shared her letter.   I want to encourage you with the encouragement I received.  I’m excited about how this will minister to you as well:  Dear Cheryl, I’ve been thinking lately of how you’re probably occupied with the wonderful God-inspired story you are writing, and I wanted to make sure I wrote you to say – keep pressing in and pressing on!  The Lord has your back.  He’s giving you courage and joy (indescribable) that will fill your heart!  I am so thankful that my family has a friend like you and your family. You all have the peace of the Lord residing within you! The other day I wrote a song called “Peace” and I want to share it with you.  So a recording of it will be coming your way via Facebook probably.  The song is based...
